Kind of has a special ring to it, wouldn't you agree? Catchy little title we've assigned to one of our mountain bikers that just happens to describe where the program begins and where it ends—just a simple statement about its geographic setting. But if you're at all familiar with mountain biking in the Canyon and Plateau country of southwestern Utah, the mere mention of Brian Head-to-Bullfrog will trigger immediate and discernible acceleration in your physiological rhythms. Again, simply stated, Brian Head-to-Bullfrog is mountain biking at its very best. It is a program that has everything for which southern Utah has become famous as one of the world's great mountain biking destinations. Breathtaking scenery, ranging from the high-alpine environment of the Dixie National Forest at Brian Head and Boulder to the surreal hoodoos of Bryce and fascinating red rock formations of Escalante and Capitol Reef, is only a part of the fascination of Brian Head-to-Bullfrog. Equally impressive is the extraordinary quality and diversity of off-road riding, from scarcely traveled dirt jeep and forest roads to remote, pristine single track. Our program assembles at the Brian Head Ski Resort in the heart of the Dixie National Forest, adjacent to Cedar Breaks National Monument. Shortly into our first day we're headed on a 4000-foot single-track descent toward Panguitch, where we'll spend our first night. Early-morning of Day 2, we'll ride the winding red rock maze of Casto Canyon and climb gently to the Paunsaugunt Plateau to Bryce Canyon National Park, where we'll spend the next two nights at Ruby's Inn. Our layover day at Bryce offers some intriguing options, including excellent hiking opportunities. We'll leave Bryce on Day 4 as we climb to Table Cliff Plateau for a final, spectacular view of the park and beyond. We'll cross the Barney Top and then launch into a 15-mile descent to Escalante and an overnight at the Prospector Lodge. Hell's Backbone and its 3000-foot ascent lies ahead for Day 5, but the views from the summit of this climb are incredible. Yet another long descent is an appropriate conclusion for this remarkable day and we'll enjoy a hearty, home-cooked meal at Pole's Place, where we'll spend the night. The adventure continues on Day 6 as we ride the sparsely-traveled Burr Trail through Capitol Reef National Park and its astounding Waterpocket Fold. We're headed for the Bullfrog Marina at Lake Powell and a final overnight at the Bullfrog Lodge. We'll linger at Lake Powell well into the afternoon of our final day before shuttling to Las Vegas. Total Mileage – 250
Date: (5 days, 4 nights; Tues-Sat) Sept. 14-18 Assembly Point: Jacob Lake, AZ (airline, rail and bus service to Flagstaff; Timberline van shuttle between Flagstaff and Jacob Lake prior to and following tour) Tour Cost: $995 (includes all lodging, all meals, support van, leaders, tour maps and narratives) (optional Timberline van shuttle between Flagstaff and Jacob Lake prior to tour and to Flagstaff following tour–$50) The Grand Canyon long has been an integral feature of Timberline's annual adventure series. We've hiked from the South Rim as part of a 7-day on-road biker/hiker, hiked from the North Rim as part of our 9-day on-road Great Canyons trip, and hiked both the Canyon and nearby Havasu Canyon in the context of our Grand Canyon Hike. Three years ago, we introduced the Grand Canyon Mountain Biker/Hiker as our first off-road program in the North Rim region. The North Rim varies dramatically from the South Rim. It is wild and far more pristine; its remote, inaccessible location accounts for an annual visitor population one-tenth that of the South Rim. Ranging in elevation from 8,800 to 9,300 feet, the North Rim is more heavily forested than the South, cooler and the recipient of more moisture, mainly in the form of snow. The Grand Canyon Mountain Biker/ Hiker combines three days of backcountry cycling in the Kaibab National Forest, including the inviting opportunity to ride the outstanding single-track of the Arizona Trail, and two days of hiking in the Canyon from the North Rim. We'll assemble at the Jacob Lake Lodge in Jacob Lake and explore the Kaibab Forest surrounding Jacob Lake in the context of an interesting day ride. Following an overnight at the Jacob Lake Lodge, we'll ride south along the Arizona Trail to the Kaibab Lodge, where we'll spend the evening. We'll then ride into Grand Canyon Park on Day 3 to the Grand Front Lodge, situated majestically on the Rim itself, and spend our final two evenings at this lodge. We'll hike deep into the canyon along the North Kaibab Trail on Day 4, and hike along the rim to Imperial Point on our final day before our van return to Flagstaff.
Total Cycling Mileage – 90
