Dialup Support - Dialup Setup - Mac OS X
These settings are for new users with an Apple Macintosh computer running Mac OS X. These instructions are also helpful for those who are experiencing connection problems and need to reset their dial-up networking settings. This step is the first step to take in order to establish an internet connection with Earthnet using your dial-up modem.
The instructions provided here apply specifically to OS 10.2, but OS 10.0, 10.1, 10.3, etc... should be very similar.
1 - Click on the Apple Menu and choose System Preferences...
2 - Click the Network icon located in the Internet & Network section:
3 - The following window should open:
Leave Location set to Automatic.
Under the Show drop-down box, choose Internal Modem (or Modem port in OS 10.3)
Make sure you are located on the TCP/IP tab (click on it if you're not) and from the Configure drop-down box, choose Using PPP.
Leave the DNS servers (or Domain Name Servers) box empty.
Leave the Search Domains box empty as well.
4 - Click on the PPP tab:
Give your dialup connection a name, such as Earthnet, or My Dial-up, or Home Connection, etc, by typing it in the Service Provider box.
Enter your Earthnet dialup username in the Account Name box. Your Earthnet dialup username is usually the same as your email address - email@example.com for example.
Enter your Earthnet password in the Password box, very carefully and with the Caps Lock key turned OFF (since your password is case sensitive).
Check the box that says Save password, unless you would prefer to be prompted for a password for each dialup session.
Type in the dialup access phone number in the Telephone Number box.
Click here to find out which local dialup access number you should use. Avoid using a long-distance phone number for your dialup access, otherwise you will be charged long distance by your long distance carrier company for the time you are connected to the Internet.
You can also add an alternate number in the Alternate Number box, if your area has several local dialup access numbers.
Check the box that says Save Password, unless you prefer to be prompted for a password everytime you want to connect to the Internet through dialup.
5 - Click on the PPP Options... button at the bottom of the window. The following dialog box will open:
Check the box next to Connect automatically when needed.
Uncheck the box next to Prompt every ... minutes to maintain connection (unless you wish to use this feature).
Uncheck the box next to Disconnect if idle for ... minutes (unless you wish to use this feature).
Check the box next to Disconnect when user logs out.
Click the OK button.
6 - You should be back to the Network window. Simply click on the Apply Now button to save your changes:
You can now close out of the Network window, and be ready to connect.
